"A number of our ‘local expects’ have described their ‘road to Damascus’ journey – a normative experience. Lean and Systems Thinking have unlocked a clear new direction of travel for them as a manager and a provider of public services. The knowledge they have gained from building skills and implementing learning has empowered them to challenge the status-quo and act on waste and failure in the system effectively with colleagues; a crucial point from the TPS approach." Peter Whitehouse, Organisational Development Consultant, Nottingham CC
Services Limited and the Public Sector
As well as our private sector and voluntary sector work, Services Ltd work extensively with UK and international public sector organisations. Since our foundation in 1983 we have been involved in numerous public sector improvement initiatives. Our consultants understand the culture and language of the public sector and the major initiatives during public sector change and improvement in the UK and abroad. We offer a complete support service for public sector organisations wanting to improve and provide better service to the public. Our range of support covers all aspects of the transition process, covering Self-Assessment, process improvement, proceduralisation, implementation of ISO 9001:2008 and updating Quality Management Systems for the recent changes, stakeholder analysis, customer focus and employee surveys, Benchmarking, the EFQM Excellence Model, training needs analysis, senior management development and mentoring, ISO 14001, Six Sigma and Lean.
Lean Public Services
At the current time the need for taking unnecessary Waste out of public services has never been greater. Whilst we are facing falling public sector revenues due to the recession, we are simultaneously facing increasing demand for services. Furthermore, we can no longer ignore the longer-term environmental impact associated with the Carbon Footprint of the Waste in our public services.
This is, however, an area where ‘the buyer must beware’. The Lean approach has fast become a bandwagon with numerous consultancies and training organisations wanting to jump on board. Many of these do not have the expertise or track record in the field, and many do not understand the public sector. There are also those who wish to over complicate or obscure the simplicity and transparency of the approach for commercial gain.

Current Public Lean implementation training courses led by Prof. Tony Bendell are as follows:
“One cannot stress the responsibility an organisation like the NHS face. To provide a service that is efficient and focuses on patient value at all times is crucial. Services Ltd’s approach in facilitating improvement within our department has been extremely beneficial. We have managed to not only streamline and improve the administrative support to clinicians but also improve patient flow through the department. By changing the focus from ‘just adding’ more staff to focusing on the root causes, we have managed to save significantly on costs. They are truly experts in identifying change as well as communicating and managing the change, which is a skill we highly appreciated.” Joelan Iveson; Service Improvement Manager, Therapies Department, Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust.
"Services Ltd’s Master Lean Belt programme and the help and training given to Members and Officers has provided a solid base from which to roll out the Lean approach. The initial batch of 14 projects started as part of the Master Lean Belt Programme has already yielded gains in 7 distinct services and the learning is being used to spread the Lean message across all services and activity in the Authority." Maureen Chaffe; Head of Information Management; Arun District Council
