Great Rock Co-op is a community shop which exists to promote local produce from farmers, growers, bakers, and makers from around the Blackshawhead area.
The co-operative aims to:
- Promote, support and encourage links between, and provide alternative routes to market for, local food producers
- Encourage and assist people to become local food producers.
- Educate people about sustainable food production and give them access to quality local food supplies.
- Encourage and facilitate skill and knowledge sharing around the entire food system from growing to consumption.
How is it run?
The clue is in the name: we are a co-operative – owned and controlled by our members. Anyone who sells their produce through the shop, or comes along to buy from us, or just wants to show their general support for our aims, can become a member. We’d really like you to join us!
Being a member
In joining the co-operative you are agreeing to try and help make it successful. That might be by supplying produce, or by regularly shopping with us. All members have the right to attend general meetings and to stand for or vote in elections for the Board who run the co-op from one week to the next.
All involved with Great Rock are volunteers (although we’d love to be successful enough to create some local jobs eventually) and there are lots of ways in which members can roll up their sleeves and give us a hand. Volunteering in the the shop on Saturdays is one way of helping but we are always looking for people who can help with publicity, running special events, maintenance tasks, funding bids and so on.
