About us

The Great Rock Co-op is a co-operatively run farm shop in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, named after a local landmark that has recently been returned to community ownership. We offer fresh, locally produced food and goods sold through dedicated shop premises situated up ‘on the tops’ of the South Pennines, but within 5 miles of 33,000 consumers. The Co-op started trading in April 2013, and prioritises small, local producers who may otherwise find it difficult to find a retail outlet to sell their goods, and provides them with the support and opportunity to start or expand their businesses through access a retail market.

From the shop premises, there are beautiful views down the valley, making GRC an ideal spot to have a drink and enjoy local produce: pies, scones and cakes to name but a few!

GRC is a cooperative run by local people to support local people, with the following aims:

  • To promote, support and encourage community links between consumers and producers.
  • To encourage and assist local residents to become food producers and entrepreneurs
  • To encourage skill and knowledge sharing about food growing and use from garden/field to kitchen.
  • To promote access to good quality local food by working with other organisations with similar objectives.
  • To provide potential employment for local people through creating a successful co-op
  • To provide education facilities for local people and schools to teach about food and rural enterprise
  • To strengthen the community by acting as a community hub, with active engagement by producers and consumers, and information about events and services available locally
  • To broaden the reach of the co-op to increase community impact and involvement by selling locally produced arts and crafts and opening a cooperative community café
  • To be a sustainable community resource, both economically and environmentally.
